"I have held many things in my hands, and I have lost them all. But whatever I have placed in God's hands, that I still possess."
- Martin Luther
"I have found that among its other benefits, giving liberates the soul of the giver."
- Maya Angelou
Followers of Christ that approach financial stewardship from a biblical perspective do not view the money we give to our church merely as a way to pay the bills. Rather, we see financial contributions as a way to help us grow spiritually in our relationship with God by supporting our church’s mission and ministry to our neighbors with a percentage of our incomes.
Followers of Jesus the Christ give unselfishly as an act of discipleship and out of a desire to make our lives simple and rich in God.
Toward this end, as a disciple of Christ, you are invited to consider three things: “How has God blessed me?” “What am I called to do as a disciple of Christ?” and “What percentage of my income is God calling me to give to God’s ministry of spreading the faith?”.
What Percentage of My Income Shall I Give?
Disciples of Christ spend time in prayer, deciding how much to give to the mission of God through the church. The biblical norm is 10%.
This is a faith-centered decision made between you, your family, and God. Giving is a spiritual practice that encourages us to let go of the material things that demand our attention and refocus our attention on God and the neighbor. Use the chart below to help guide your thoughts and prayers.
1. Find the yearly income that is closest to your own on the left and consider the percentage closest to your current monthly giving.
2. Consider growing your giving by at least 1% toward the eventual goal of a tithe (10%).
3. This will decide your new giving amount.

Give to ELCA World Hunger
Nearly 800 million people – that's 1 in 9 people in our world today – are hungry.
As members of the ELCA, we are called to respond. We are a church that rolls up our sleeves and gets to work.
Working with and through our congregations, in the United States, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands Lutheran churches overseas and other partners, ELCA World Hunger is uniquely positioned to reach communities in need. From health clinics to microloans, water wells to animal husbandry, community meals to advocacy, your gifts to ELCA World Hunger make it possible for the ELCA to respond, supporting sustainable solutions that get at the root causes of hunger and poverty.
Give to Lutheran Disaster Response
